In the era of open innovation, the advantages of cooperation are growing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\r\n \r\n\r\nUsing Chesbrough\u2019s argument that \u201cnot all smart people work for us<\/em>,\u201d businesses are <\/span>advised to be<\/span> receptive to innovation from outside sources and to shift emphasis away from solely internal R&D activities. However, adopting a proper \u201copen strategy\u201d is necessary to <\/span>leverage<\/span> such a concept.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nStudies show that firms that do not cooperate and exchange knowledge lose their competitive advantage, as they reduce their knowledge base and lose the ability to enter exchange relations with other firms and organizations <\/span>in the long run<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAlthough the era of open innovation has begun for many firms, we still need a clearer understanding of the mechanisms, inside and outside of the organization, and when and how to fully <\/span>benefit<\/span> from the concept. Furthermore, a closed innovation approach does not meet the growing demand for shorter innovation cycles and shorter time to market.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n \r\n

It embraces the advantages of openness as a means of expanding organizations\u2019 value creation and imposes certain restrictions on traditional business models when those restrictions are <\/span>required<\/span> to encourage the increased adoption of an innovation strategy.<\/span><\/span>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nOpen strategy acknowledges the need to sustain open innovation approaches over time. To sustain a business model, capturing some of the value created by doing open innovation is necessary.
