The Montreal Port Authority wants to move the Port of Montreal from a traditional infrastructure provider to a provider of digital solutions for its supply chain. Collision Lab X Centech explores four pillars of innovation of importance to the Port of Montreal, its employees and its customers: 1) supply chain visibility and cargo mobility; 2) cyber security; 3) process improvement; and 4) decarbonization of the supply chain.

Start-up Funartech uses digital vision and operational research to design a tool to predict cab needs when passengers disembark at the Grand Quai from 2021. This initiative will help to better manage passenger flows, improve processes and reduce the environmental footprint of port activities. The solution will compile information over the years that will facilitate the optimization of service demand for a passenger upon arrival.

An augmented reality program, aimed at modeling Montreal’s port sites and facilities in three dimensions, was the subject of a partnership with PreVu3D and ARA Robotics. The 3D model, combined with the expertise of PreVu3D and its software, makes it possible to improve the planning of current and future infrastructures, to optimize spaces, to visit the Port’s facilities in virtual reality and to create 3D intervention scenarios for preventionists. The 3D model also makes it possible to present the port’s territory in augmented reality in an interactive experience at the Port Interpretation Centre at the Grand Quai du Port of Montreal.

Jalon is an NPO whose mission is to accelerate the emergence of innovative sustainable mobility solutions to shape tomorrow’s urban mobility.

Jalon accompanies local and international companies, large and small, to support their understanding of mobility issues, their networking and visibility in the Montreal ecosystem and thus the experimentation of their innovations.

1. Jalon is a partner of Centech for the first Acceleration cohort specialized in “Mobility and Urban Innovation” which supports 7 startups from May to August 2020.

2. Jalon is initiating an end-of-study project with ETS to explore the feasibility of electric cargo bike concepts and take the project to prototyping.

success stories

Since September 20129, Jalon has been supporting the Ville-Marie borough in the deployment of the Colibri green urban delivery pilot project. Its objective is to minimize the impact of the last kilometer of delivery by setting up a mini-hub and using green delivery vehicles such as electric cargo bikes. Jalon’s role is to mobilize the project’s stakeholders, assist in the operation of the site and, above all, analyze the results in order to make recommendations.

ENCQOR

The ENCQOR (Evolution of Cloud Services in the Quebec-Ontario Corridor for Research and Innovation) project is a transformative partnership between Canada, Quebec and Ontario focused on research and innovation in 5G disruptive technologies and system adoption initiatives and uses. The ENCQOR project establishes the first pre-commercial 5G digital infrastructure corridor in the country, a key to making the digital economy a reality.

YOUR PURPOSE AT COLLISION LAB

SMEs that will access the iPaaS innovation platform to test or develop their technologies and services on ENCQOR test benches will be among the first companies to market 5G solutions worldwide. An essential competitive advantage in the context of a globalized economy.

ENCQOR is building a network of 5G test benches to enable companies of all sizes, IT professionals, researchers in the public or private sector and graduate students to quickly access an ultramodern 5G development and testing platform for prototyping new products and services. The Quebec innovation sites are now open and those in Ontario will soon be up and running.

With potential speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second, increased network capacity and ultra-low latencies of a few milliseconds, 5G will be essential for bringing a whole new generation of products and services to market, particularly in the areas of connected and autonomous vehicles, remote health systems, virtual/augmented reality solutions, smart cities and new Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Despite the constraints posed by the pandemic and the summer vacations, several new SMEs have joined ENCQOR 5G in recent weeks, so that we have now passed the milestone of 450+ SMEs committed to the program.

We are very proud of these results, which demonstrate the willingness of entrepreneurs in Quebec and Ontario to innovate by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by 5G technology. With the addition of new SMEs, the participation of the academic community and large corporations, ENCQOR 5G is helping to build a strong 5G ecosystem in Canada, capable of competing on a global scale and helping economic recovery in the context of VIDOC-19.

The resilience of our sophisticated communication networks, the stability of the increasingly intelligent infrastructures around us, and the ability of our first responders to communicate in crisis situations are issues we rarely think about. Our overall security and the ability to easily connect to others are aspects of daily life that we often take for granted. The networks we all depend on to communicate are not impervious to national disasters or security threats. When this infrastructure is compromised, the ability to quickly rebuild it often makes the difference between life and death.

When networks fail and communications slow down, so do the critical services that are needed to keep people safe. Effective communications and rapid response capabilities are essentially interdependent. With the growth of IoT, large data volumes and user demand for bandwidth, smarter networks are essential. In times of crisis, it is even more vital that networks function flawlessly. ReMI works with front-line operators to maximize network efficiency by enabling devices to be intelligently prioritized, managed and configured with minimal user interaction.
In the event of unforeseen events, it is essential to maintain communications and network uptime. The ReMI project makes this possible.

ReMI’s mission: to bring together the best brains from industry and academia to develop artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies for mission-critical networks.

ReMI is a transformational institute founded in Montreal, Canada, which focuses on the development of artificial intelligence and machine learning technology. ReMI stands for Resilient Machine Learning Institute and was founded by L’École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) and Ultra in 2019.

Since then, other organizations and schools have become involved. The ReMI team is composed of international doctoral, postdoctoral, master and postgraduate students, professors and engineers from Ultra. The institute is a unique organization that uses applied science to solve real-world problems using advanced programming techniques in the fields of distributed real-time AI and ML. ReMI will shape the future of critical network operations.

The ReMI project has already achieved promising results on applications related to wireless environment classification (threat detection and anti-jamming capability), automated network deployment and optimization, and multi-agent AI/ML collaboration in contested environments. More than thirty students and professors are now involved in the project and many national and international governmental organizations have shown interest in our research. We are currently engaged in a major government project to enable interoperability of communications between public safety and military forces during major crises.
